“Be Careful Little Mouth What You Say…”
Matthew 12:36
“But I say unto you, that every idle word that men shall speak, they shall give account thereof in the day of judgement.”
Words are so powerful they can be used to build someone up, they can tear someone down and slander them.
Matthew 12:34
“O, generation of vipers, how can ye being evil speak good things? For out of the abundance of the heart the mouth speaks.”
What comes out of our mouths is a great indicator of where our heart is… who we truly are.
Cruel hurtful words do not always come out through cussing or sounding angry. Some of the cruelest words spoken come out followed by “just kidding” or “bless your heart” that does not change the meaning of these words or the thoughts behind them.
The best definition I found for idle words is “foolish, irreverent talk which does not build up or edify others”
We live in a world full of noise and distractions… people fear silence.. so often the most foolish words are spoken simply to fill the air.
Proverbs 17:27
“He that hath knowledge, spareth his words; and a man of understanding is of an excellent spirit.”
Words reflect our character. We tell someone we will do something we need to actually do it
Proverbs 12:22
“Lying lips are an abomination to the Lord, but they that deal truly are his delight.”
There are angry, slanderous, hurtful malicious words. These are spoken out of a heart of bitterness and unforgiveness.
Psalm 139:23
“Search me, O God, and know my heart; try me, and know my thoughts, and see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me the way everlasting.”
There are words spoken in fear, usually shown through words of the worst case scenario… “this will never work out” “it's going to be bad” “I can't do this”
Matthew 6:34
“Take therefore no thought for the morrow; for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself, sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof”
Boastful, proud words… spoken to build up self while tearing others down
Luke 18:11-12
“The Pharisee stood and prayed thus with himself, God I thank thee that I am not as other men are, extortioners, unjust, adulterers, or even as the publican. I fast twice a week, I give tithes of all I possess.”
There are so many forms of idle words… so many ways our tongue can destroy relationships and hurt even the very ones we love most.
Three verses of the way we use our mouths to avoid idle words:
Matthew 5:37
“But let your communication be yea yea; nay nay for whatsover is more than these is evil.”
James 1:19
“Wherefore, my beloved brethren let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath.”
Psalm 19:14
“Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O Lord, my strength and my redeemer.”
Matthew 12:36
