“A Matter of Time” March 30,2025
Ephesians 5:16
“Redeeming the time because the days are evil.”
Last Sunday Pastor spoke about the importance of going to church. I pondered his words and had a few thoughts. When there is a fellowship meal the seats are full… on the day to come and worship our Lord and Savior many seats are empty. When there is a prayer meeting one or two come the other seats are empty.
Most people use the excuse of having other things to do, too tired or I don't have time.
Psalm 90:12
“So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom.”
To learn of Him to grow in Him requires time. The Bible speaks of bringing Him the first fruits, the best of the crop, the first of our money, but all too often we bring Him our leftovers.
God gave us all 24 hours each day… 8 for work… 6-8 for sleep… 8-10 for choices. We all too often use those precious hours so unwisely. Mindless TV, playing on our phones and other such things.
All these thoughts led me to Luke 10:38-42
“Now it came to pass as they went that he entered into a certain village; and a certain woman named Martha received Him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus feet and heard His word, But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to Him and said Lord dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone bid her therefore that she help me. And Jesus answered and said unto her Martha, Martha thou art careful and troubled about many things, but something is needful and Mary hath chosen that good part which shall not be taken away from her.”
Martha acknowledges Jesus as Lord, but has no time for Him… there's work to be done… she chose the tasks at hand over time with Jesus and He was literally sitting in her home.
I'm certain Mary also had work to do… tasks to complete, but she put all that aside for time with Jesus. When Jesus left that day and Mary took care of her to do list I'm certain she accomplished her work with joy in her heart, peace in her mind, and strength to do what was necessary.
There's more to the story of these two sisters…
John 11:5
“Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus.”
John 11:20
“Then Martha as soon as she saw that Jesus was coming went and met him, but Mary sat still in the house.”
Martha leaves the house to meet up with Jesus, Mary sat still in the house.
Perhaps from all the time Mary had sat with Jesus prior to the death of her brother Lazarus.. She was able to be still and know and trust, regardless the outcome, Jesus would do what was best.
Martha in all her busyness ran after Jesus… hoping for the best…fearful her brother was gone forever… wavering faith from lack of time with the one she calls Lord.
John 11:39-40
“Jesus said, take ye away the stone Martha, the sister of him that was dead, saith unto him Lord, by this time he stinketh for he hath been dead four days, Jesus saith unto her, said I not unto thee, that if thou wouldst believe, thou shouldest see the glory of God.”
God loved Martha, God showed Martha mercy, and allowed her to see with her eyes the miracle.
Perhaps from that day on Martha sat alongside her sister Mary at the feet of Jesus, when He came to visit.
Our savior is so gracious and merciful… His love for us is beyond comprehension. He does not demand our time with Him in a controlling or domineering way. He wants our time because when we go through challenges, hard times, grief, sadness, pain and suffering we will have the ability to say on our darkest day, I know this one I serve will see me through. We will not run in fear like Martha… We will be like Mary, be still and know He is God.
